This book, The Alchemist, is not even cheap wisdom. It’s the reverse. Like all these vague, unfocused “new age” offerings, this is a pseudo-psalm sung to the only god it knows, The Ego. Coelho is not a scientist, or a seer. He is a wanna-be whose principal ambition, as he says, was to be “a successful writer.” He aligns the “wisdom” contained in The Alchemist with the fact that it became a NewYorkTimes bestseller. The message of the book is essentially a form of capitalist individualism transposed into the language of a children’s book - “If you really really want something, the ENTIRE UNIVERSE will subscribe itself to your ego needs, like a cosmic overindulgent mother.” This unspeakably shallow moral vision aligns very well with the fatuous New Age temperament of the West at its worst, deeply invested in the faith that it’s really “all about me”, and all that’s necessary to bring such a vision forth is to be yet more self-involved. This is not wisdom, but childish tom-foolery, worthy only of adaptation into some kind of Hollywood kitsch. This is to say nothing of the writing itself, which is platitudinous and appalling. It’s a book that is loved only by persons who have never read a book before.

Bart, why would you mislead people? That statement was dishonest. When Jesus says God would intervein and destroy the evil powers, He said it would be during the generation that He described as the last. Matthew 24:33-34 "When ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, this generation(as in, the one generation who sees all of these things) shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Matthew 24 is all about the end times and what we would see at that time.

Awesome Book. 45 years ago, while in the service I learned about the Baha'i Faith. And I happen to be one of those members of AA. Although you don't mention the Baha'i Faith, this prophet did say that we live in a time where the world will start to look for similarities in religions and come to understand that the differences are more cultural. But he left it up to the individual to do a life long investigation of Truth with the goal of seeking unity. So you just gave me reason to read these authors that Mr. Exman worked with. I am a Big Book Step Study advocate, there too, it reminds us to see where others were right. This can only happen if one opens up with open mind and heart seeking Oneness. Thanks for your effort.

I have just accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I am shocked, though, to realize just how much Jesus spoke about hell in the Bible, and in such uncompromising terms of eternity, torment after death, of burning and judgement. His words seem to exclude the possibility of this being temporary, or metaphorical, or a psychological state within this life. How can universalism explain this away, without doubting the Bible or distorting it? I really wish I could. I hate the idea of hell, but I have to love Jesus as he is and was. On the other hand, the traditional doctrine that God sent his son to die on the cross as a sacrifice to save us from eternal damnation, seems not to add up on the balance sheet; after all, Jesus wasn't eternally damned- he died an excruciating death in this world, but even that didn't save many mere humans from still having to die our own excruciating deaths in this world. The mind boggles ! All I can do, though, is trust and pray, and believe in the merciful character of God, whatever we see in this world.
